Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation

SAW Team

Rescue Cases

Our dedicated team of volunteers and rescuers goes above and beyond to assist animals in need. While many people associate rescues with accidents, the situations we handle are often far more complex.

Animals, both pets and strays, can become victims of vehicle accidents, and natural disasters, or find themselves trapped in hazardous locations like deep trenches, canals, wells, and even trees. Our rescuers take significant risks to locate and save these animals. When needed, we collaborate with other NGOs’ specialized teams for particularly challenging rescues.

Human-Animal Conflicts

As human civilization expands, increasing encroachment on forests and wildlife habitats is leading to more frequent conflicts between humans and animals. During the Sankranti kite festival, many people use manja—a finely crafted, glass-coated string—that poses a serious threat to birds, animals, and even humans. These nearly invisible, abandoned strings often entangle birds, causing severe injuries. Rescued birds are promptly treated and released back into their natural habitats.

Likewise, during weddings, major sports events, and festivals like Diwali, the use of firecrackers near residential areas results in countless animals and birds becoming frightened, burned, or displaced. The loud explosions and bright lights cause many animals to flee in fear, often leading to injuries and sudden death. The SAW team is dedicated to rescuing and caring for these affected animals and birds, helping them recover and return to safety.

Cruelty Cases

Beaten, abused, run over, or abandoned—many animals suffer due to human cruelty, despite compassion being a core part of our nature. Some individuals harm animals, whether pets, strays, or livestock, while others keep their pets in appalling conditions or abandon them without a second thought. These abandoned animals, ill-equipped to survive, add to the already overwhelming population on the streets, where they are vulnerable to attacks, extreme weather, and starvation. Tragically, some people deliberately harm or run over animals, often leading to fatal injuries or, in some cases, leaving the animals permanently disabled. Hurting animals is a punishable offence in India, and we firmly condemn such behaviour and suggest taking appropriate legal action to address it.

Skin Diseases and Maggot Infestation

Stray animals often endure malnutrition and unhygienic conditions around garbage dumps, which lead to severe skin issues. These issues typically go unnoticed until there is significant fur loss or visible infection. Thankfully, Blue Cross Society of Pune (BCS Pune), Animal Rescue Trust (ART), Petsforce, and other shelters provide treatment for stray dogs suffering from skin infections, achieving a high recovery rate. Many street animals also fall victim to bites from mites, fleas, or even other animals. If left untreated, these bites can develop into deep wounds, creating an ideal environment for maggots that can cause serious harm. Our volunteers treat such wounds either on-site or at shelters, providing the animals with the care they need.

TVT and Cancer Cases

Unsterilized animals that frequently mate are at risk of developing STDs and various types of organ prolapses. These issues are often undetected in the early stages and can quickly worsen. Additionally, many street animals suffer from tumorous growth due to poor nutrition and lack of regular medical care. Animals with such conditions are brought to SAW NGO partner shelters in Pune city, where they receive medical treatment, including chemotherapy, and in advanced cases, may even be given permanent boarding to support their recovery.

Illegal Breeding

The commercial breeding of pedigree animals has led to disturbing levels of abuse. Practices like backyard breeding, forced mating of pedigree pets, and even the kidnapping of these animals for breeding are sadly all too common. Female animals are often discarded by breeders once they can no longer reproduce, leaving them abandoned in poor health on the streets. Unlicensed breeding, keeping animals in confined spaces without proper nutrition and exercise, and backyard breeding are all legal offenses. SAW is dedicated to rescuing these animals and rehoming them, offering them a second chance at a better life.
